The Legend Of The Bacoo

A Bacoo (BAH-KU) is a mischievous mythological spirit often claimed to be found in the Caribbean.

Bacoo’s are told to be found in empty corked rum bottles floating in the Caribbean Sea and are said to have magical powers.

Many other cultures have slight variances of names and/or appearances of mischievous folklore characters, such as Aladdin’s “Genie of the Lamp”.

The Bacoo closely resembles a leprechaun from Celtic Mythology. It is a dwarf like character that rewards its owner with wishes, and not just three.  A Bacoo is recognized by it's distinctive large eyes, long arms and legs.  The Bacoo lives on bananas and milk.

The legend of the Bacoo has also been called “bacucu” meaning banana. “Baku” in many West African languages means “little brother” or “short man”.

The Bacoo is active mainly at night, and a satisfied Bacoo will answer the wishes of its owner, however you must keep your Bacoo happy.

That leads to the question, How do you keep a Bacoo Happy? To prevent your Bacoo from causing havoc, you must give him a daily ration of bananas and milk. Bacoo is a trickster that can shapeshift, make itself unseen and mess with people around him.

So, what do you do if you have a Bacoo messing with you? It is said they can be trapped inside a bottle, but not very easily. The best way to go about it is first, attract them with some milk and bananas by putting some into a bottle. Once the Bacoo has gone into the bottle, jam a cork into the neck to act as a stopper. Once this is accomplished, the Bacoo cannot escape.

The Bacoo bottle is then thrown into the ocean.

If you find a Bacoo bottle your wish will most definitely be granted.
